An Ember In The Ashes by Sabaa Tahir

Laia is a slave. Elias is a soldier. Neither is free.

Under the Martial Empire, defiance is met with death. Those who do not vow their blood and bodies to the Emperor risk the execution of their loved ones and the destruction of all they hold dear.

It is in this brutal world, inspired by ancient Rome, that Laia lives with her grandparents and older brother. The family ekes out an existence in the Empire’s impoverished backstreets. They do not challenge the Empire. They’ve seen what happens to those who do.

But when Laia’s brother is arrested for treason, Laia is forced to make a decision. In exchange for help from rebels who promise to rescue her brother, she will risk her life to spy for them from within the Empire’s greatest military academy.

There, Laia meets Elias, the school’s finest soldier—and secretly, its most unwilling. Elias wants only to be free of the tyranny he’s being trained to enforce. He and Laia will soon realize that their destinies are intertwined—and that their choices will change the fate of the Empire itself.”

~Synopsis from Goodreads

Okay wow I was not expecting to like this book. I mean it’s overhyped and pretty gory. So I wasn’t expecting to really like it. But I loved it and I’m so excited to see what happens in the next two books.

Elias and Laia are fun and very different characters.  The whole story is just so interesting and nice and yeah.

I’m sorry for this review being short and not that great!! I’m absolutely exhausted and stressed.

I gave this book a 4 out of 5 stars! I really liked it and I for sure recommend it.

Until Next Time,

Alex

From mortal enemies to unexpected allies, two teenagers try to protect everything that matters most.

Ella Harper has met every challenge that life has thrown her way. She’s tough, resilient, and willing to do whatever it takes to defend the people she loves, but the challenge of a long-lost father and a boyfriend whose life is on the line might be too much for even Ella to overcome.

Reed Royal has a quick temper and even faster fists. But his tendency to meet every obstacle with violence has finally caught up with him. If he wants to save himself and the girl he loves, he’ll need to rise above his tortured past and tarnished reputation.

No one believes Ella can survive the Royals. Everyone is sure Reed will destroy them all.
They may be right.

With everything and everyone conspiring to keep them apart, Ella and Reed must find a way to beat the law, save their families, and unravel all the secrets in their Twisted Palace.”

Okay just wow. Like what even. This book gave out so many feels it’s insane. Like how can I possibly put this book into words? There were so many twists, but it was done so well that it made it addicting. It was crazy and the ending wrapped up so beautifully.

I gave this book a 5 out of 5 stars because duh. It was addicting but still written beautifully. I absolutely recommend this to 17+ again because of mature content. I still think it is a great book though.

Alex
